Henderson-Ames Company (Kalamazoo, Mich.)
The Henderson-Ames Company origins go as far back as 1866. In 1866, Frank Henderson (10/8/1841-1/3/1899) and his partner, Charles Brown operated a saddle and luggage business. In 1873, Henderson added regalia and uniforms to his company’s products. In 1893, Henderson merged his company with Ames Sword Company forming what became The Henderson-Ames Company. In 1895, Henderson built one of Kalamazoo’s well-known landmarks, Henderson Castle. The company produced military uniforms during World War I and continued into the 1920s. The company hit hard by the Great Depression, merged with the Lilley Company of Columbus, Ohio and all operations moved from Kalamazoo to Columbus.
