Biography

Uriah Upjohn was the ninth of twelve children, and the second son born to Mary Standard and William Upjohn (1770-1853). Born in Wales, he grew up in England. On September 15, 1837, he was married to Mliss Maria Mills, a daughter of Deacon Simeon Mills, one of the pioneers of Gull Prairie. Uriah Upjohn and his wife became the parents of twelve children, seven daughters and five sons. Eleven grew to maturity and of them five have graduated from the medical schools. He is the father of William E. Upjohn, founder of The Upjohn Company in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He passed way November 23, 1896.

Scope and Contents

Manufacturing records, special formula books, research entry books, private formula books as well as material pre-dating the Upjohn Company from W. E. and Uriah Upjohn. In this series there is also a full research and formula record from Department 15 from the years 1927-1935. Most material dates from 1900-1947, but there is limited material before 1900 and after 1947.

Scope and Contents From the Sub-Series:

The material in this series consists of the two volumes of the Medical Tribune newspaper, paintings and illustrations of equipment, vinyl records from the Dewolf Music Library used for background music for film, television, and radio, drug leaflets and portfolios, a ledger and the N. B. Keeney and Sons Bean record, labels and sample books, painted transparencies, other miscellaneous oversized materials such as posters and signs, and the Uriah Upjohn medical journal.
