Scope and Contents The Upjohn Company was founded in 1886 by Dr. William E. Upjohn (6/5/1853-10/18/1932) of Kalamazoo, Michigan. William was an 1875 graduate of the University of Michigan Medical School. He invented the easily digested “friable” pill which he received a patent for in 1885. It was in the following year that he and his brothers Henry (7/22/1843-1/2/1887) and Fredrick (1857-1917) founded the Upjohn Pill and Granule Company as a means of manufacturing the new friable pills as well as 186 various...

Scope and Contents James Spencer Van Antwerp was born on October 7, 1894 in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He married Anna Margaret Kuschell (b. 1898) on December 7, 1919. The couple lived in Lansing until 1921 when they moved to Kalamazoo and opened Van Antwerp Drug Store located on 110 Portage Street. In 1924, James and Anna had a daughter they named Doris. Van Avery's Drug Store Collection

Scope and Contents Charles E. Van Avery (6/5/1876-9/24/1957) started Van Avery’s Drug Store in 1901. The store was located at 735 Portage Street in Kalamazoo. In 1908, a second location was opened at 502 West North Street by Charles’s brother Ray Van Avery (5/7/1881-5/1/1955). By 1916 Charles’s store at 735 Portage had closed. However, he opened a new location located at 714 North Burdick St. in 1921 named C.E. Van Avery and Son. In 1926 Ray Van Avery’s store was taken over by Charles’s son Gerald (b. 1896)....

Scope and Contents In January 1902, Mrs. Fanny M. Bair had a library built and donated it to the Vicksburg Ladies Library Association, by that time membership was 63 women.
