Heritage Community of Kalamazoo

 Organization

Biography

The Heritage Community of Kalamazoo was established in 1945 when Mayor Louis Sutherland and local residents looked to improve Kalamazoo’s system for senior care. Mayor Sutherland worked with Dr. Richard U Light, Mrs. Gifford “Love” Upjohn as well as community members to invest in secure, comfortable living for all seniors, regardless of their ability to pay.

Today there are seven communities on the Portage Street site for independent living, assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing care. Heritage Community is the oldest continuum of care in Southwest Michigan, serving numerous residents.
