biographical statement
Adriaan Eduard Verhulst was born in Ghent on November 9, 1929. Having studied law and history at the University of Ghent in 1956, he was an assistant and lecturer. In 1958 he obtained his doctorate in history with a dissertation on the medieval land of the Ghent St. Bavo's Abbey. From 1965 to 1995 he was a professor at Ghent University, the historical geography, socio-economic history of the Middle Ages and the history of the Netherlands as specializations. In 1995 he was honored as a scientist with the quinquennial Ernest-John Solvay Prize, one of the highest academic honors.
