The notebook opens with a copy of an etching of Oxford Castle, Oxfordshire, made by Godfrey and dated March 1775. Abstract
R. H. C. Davis's notebook surveying the architectural elements of churches from parts of England. His title from the first page reads: "Volume VIII dealing mainly with Oxon, but including Canterbury Cathedral, parts of Berks, Glos, Hants, Wores, and Surrey". The entries were written from October 17, 1937 through March 28, 1938. Organized by location, entries are written on the front of the page with corrections or later additions added on the back. Some entries begin with a list of dates starting with when the structure was raised, and including notable events such as when reconstructions or restorations were made. The list is followed by a summary of architectural elements based on observations and research and, occasional, illustrations. The major theme of the entries is Davis's research into mason marks, both observed in buildings and researched. Some entries have Latin text copied from the resources he consulted. Entries are written on the front of each page with corrections or later additions added on the back. Throughout the notebook loose material has been inserted and includes letters, booklets, and notes on scrap paper. The first letter, written on All Souls College Oxford Stationary, is addressed to Davis. The letter dated August 6, 1946 and written in unreadable cursive. The second letter is on Oxford stationary, addressed to Davis, and dated August 3, 1941. The writer is E. F. Jacob. The cursive handwriting is unreadable. At the end of the notebook is a pictorial postcard, newspaper clipping, and two booklets. The first booklet is from the Oxford Architectural and Historical Society, and a newspaper clipping titled "Vindication of the Mallard". The final booklet features the floor plan of Canterbury Cathedral (7th edition).
