Scope and Contents

Delta Chapter of Alpha Beta Epsilson, originally founded as the ABE Alumnae Sorority of Western Michigan University in 1930, promoted the well-being of its members, cooperated with WMU to further interest in higher education, and sought to form a lasting sisterhood of its members. It changed its title to the Delta Chapter eleven years later in 1941, becoming one of at least 22 chapters throughout Michigan and Indiana. Delta Chapter contributed to the university is a variety of ways, notably with four stained glass windows and the choir stalls in Kanley Chapel, outdoor benches across campus, and a rose mirror of Blanche Draper, the first honorary member of the chapter. A scholarship, the Alpha Beta Epsilon/Lucille Abbot Knobbs Endowment Fund, continues to offer funding for members and the direct descendants of members.

Custodial History

This is the charter of the Delta Chapter of Alpha Beta Epsilon. Julie Lenczycki from the Architecture and Design Division of Facilities Management donated the charter to the University Archives.

Physical Description

The charter is set in a black wooden frame, which is fitted to a pane of glass that sits on top of a cardboard insert resting over the charter itself. Three cutaways in the cardboard separate sections describing the mission of the sorority, a list of contributions of the chapter to Western Michigan University, and the signatures of members on the charter as the time of its induction along with that of then President Paul V. Sangren.

The frame and glass show no signs of wear and the same goes for both the charter and the cardboard. The frame will be left in place over concerns that the charter may be damaged if separated from the cardboard.
