Ruth Emily Bennett and Fred Lake Moffat met at Western Michgian University when Ruth attended the play "The Art of Being Bored" that Fred was a cast member in. Fred was studying Manual Training and graduated in 1917. Ruth was involved in the music department and graduatedin 1918. Both participated in various extra-curricular activities. Fred was the Junior class treasurer as well as a part of the football team, track team, and choir. Ruth was a member of the women's chorus and glee club. They were married in 1919 and moved to Detroit where Fred started working as a teacher. In July of 1921, their son Robert was born. By 1930, Fred was promoted to principal and Ruth had also begun work as a music teacher.
