Biographical / Historical

The Michigan Buggy Company began in Kalamazoo in 1883. Founded by Moses Lane and Frank Lay, it produced 19,000 buggies in 30 different patterns by 1886. In 1909 it began to produce automobiles and went bankrupt in 1913.

The advertisement for the buckboard had been in A-1195 Michigan History Division. In addition, the other items had been purchased with the Starring Endowment.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .05 cubic feet and is composed of several advertisements of varying sizes. Two of the advertisements are 8 ½” x 11”, one of which in black-and-white advertises a Buckboard, the other in green, Garland bicycles. There also are seven multicolored trade cards ranging in size from 3 ½”x5” to 2 ½” x 4”. They are on a heavier stock of cardboard with colored illustrations of ships, flowers, children, kittens and birds.

The name "Michigan Buggy Co., Kalamazoo, Mich." is printed on the front of the cards. The items are in good condition. The cards, other than a little wear at the corners are in excellent condition. The green advertisement for bicycles is in good shape, although is slightly faded at the edges. The advertisement for the buckboard has a slight tear at the top and a little wear along the creases.
