Leonidas Farm Ledger

It is not certain who the people recorded in this ledger are or to whom it belonged. C. L. Bower is probably Charles Bower. He was born in Germany in 1831 and immigrated to the US in 1867 where he worked as a Farm Laborer in Paw Paw, Michigan.

Physical Description

This collection is .25 cubic feet. The ledger is 9 inches by 7 inches in size. The binding is red. It is in poor condition with a fragile binding and a few pages falling out. The pages are all yellowed and many are stained, torn, or creased. Much of the handwriting in the ledger is illegible.

Inside both the front and back covers of the ledger there are math sums and little notes written. A note with the name George Frances Murphy is pinned inside the front cover. On the back cover an idea for curing earaches. The name C L Bower Paw Paw, Michigan 1888 is written on the first page of the ledger. The records inside the ledger deal mostly with work done by various farmers and laborers, payments made, and produce and supplies bought and sold. A large number of the pages are labeled Cash Paid Out or Cash Received. The records in the ledger were written mostly between 1888 and 1899. However, there are a few notes that date early and one note about “Uncle William Wykeman” written inside the front cover dated 1903.
