Scope and Contents

The booklet was printed for the 70th annual convention for the International Typographical Union (ITU) which was held in Kalamazoo, Michigan from August 10-15, 1915. Inside the book are small photographs of the general committee and smaller planning committees. It appears as if the convention may have been planned by individuals in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids. Included is a history of the Kalamazoo Union #122 of the ITU, along with a welcome from Guy Wilson, president of the Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce and an article by Howard Hall, a reporter for the Kalamazoo Gazette, entitled, “Kalamazoo Gates Ajar” where he mentions that there are 10 paper mills in the area employing 7,000 people.There are statements by national union officers and a list of delegates to the convention. Kalamazoo’s representatives were John Harvigsen and R.M Henning (alternate). In the booklet in the classified section is a photograph of John Harvigsen.In the classified section are a number of advertisements including one for Crescent Engraving, Kalamazoo; the Kalamazoo Gazette and the Local Chapter, Kalamazoo Typographical Union #22 which lists their current members.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .10 cubic feet and is composed of one program booklet, 9 ½” x 12 ½” x ¼”. It has a heavy greenish color paper cover with a drawing of a factory and a large stalk of celery. The pages inside which are printed on a glossier stock are in sepia tone. The program booklet is bound by a silk braid. The booklet is in good condition although it shows wear and tear especially at the corners. The braid also is dirty and shredded at the edges.
