Biographical / Historical

Kathleen Koets (1898-1995) was born in Kalamazoo to parents John and Adriana Koets. She was a lifelong member of the First Reformed Church in Kalamazoo. As a young adult she was active at the YWCA. In 1915 she was pictured in the Kalamazoo Gazette as one of the members of the Frank Street Social Center Glee Club. She was also a member of the Philadora Club. The Philadora was one of five YWCA breakaway clubs. The club was a combination of office and industrial working young women. Philadora meetings began at 6pm at the YWCA and included supper, singing, a guest speaker and a bible class. Ms. Koets worked as a stenographer at the First National Bank for 29 years. She retired in 1963. She shares a headstone with her younger sister Kay Koets (1903-1988) at the Riverside Cemetery.
