Owosso Businessmen’s Association Collection

 Collection
Identifier: RH-A-3670

Scope and Contents

This is a program for a dinner banquet held for the Owosso Businessmen’s Association. While there is little information on particular Businessmen’s Associations in Owosso, research has confirmed there have been Businessmen’s Associations in other cities such as Ann Arbor, Michigan around the same time period. Because a majority of men involved in the toasts were from Owosso and the titles of the toasts such as “…relations of the lawyers to other business men,” it is assumed O.B.M.A. stands for “Owosso Businessmen’s Association.”

The focus on this collection is the program’s menu. The menu features cold meats, salads, vegetables, relishes, breads, cakes, desserts, and refreshments. Cold meats offered were beef a la mode, beef tongue, sugar cured ham, and jellied veal. Salads offered were chicken salad and lobster salad. Vegetables offered were Lyonnaise [sic] potatoes, beets, and Saratoga chips. Relished offered were sliced cucumbers, tomatoe [sic] catsup, Worcestershire sauce, queen olives, plum jelly, currant jelly, lemon jelly, and strawberry jelly. Breads offered were white bread, graham bread, and O.B.M.A. rolls. Cakes offered were chocolate cream cake, angel’s food, jelly cake, cocoanut [sic] cake, snow cake, and chocolate cake. Desserts offered were Neopolitan [sic] ice cream, strawberry ice cream, assorted cakes and wafers, oranges, bananas, “pine apples,” cherries and apricots. Bent’s crackers, Roquefort and Edam cheese were also offered. Refreshments included coffee, tea, and lemonade.
