The Fontana Festival of Music and Art began in 1980, held in Shelbyville, Michigan. The summer festival lasted from July to September and featured local and regional artists and musicians.

The Society eventually expanded their programming to include concerts held during the winter with local musicians as well as touring ensembles. In 2001, the Society merged with the Chamber Music Society of Kalamazoo to form the Fontana Chamber of Arts. They hold 8 to 10 performances each year from September to May. They also hold a Fontana Downtown Series, a Fontana International Chamber Music Series, and a Summer Music Festival. The Chamber of Arts has done some collaborating with the Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival. They also have their own publication, Fontana Footnotes/Notes, which releases issues four times a year.
