Ladies' Library Association
Scope and Contents
The Kalamazoo Ladies' Library Association was the first woman's club organized in Michigan, and the third in the United States. The organization met in various places beginning in 1852 and in 1879, they began meeting in the present LLA building, when it was opened. Physical Description
The collection amounts to .75 cubic feet and is contained within one full and one half Hollinger. The collection includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, legal paperwork, annual reports and minutes, yearbooks, reports and photographs.
Items in the collection are in generally fair to good condition. Newspaper articles have been photocopied to preserve their information.
Provenance
This collection is composed of items relating to the Ladies' Library Association of Kalamazoo from the years 1837 to 2000. The majority of the collection was donated by Florence Schweiss in 1987. The yearbooks were donated by Marian Starbuck in 2001.
Notes
This collection was reprocessed and inventoried in 2011.
