The collection is comprised of various materials relating to Garret Van Haaften. They date from the late 1940’s to the 1990’s. The largest item is a photo of Van Haaften, which is stored as part of a separate collection. The items range in size from 3.5in X 3in. - 10.5in x 11.5in. The collection is in good condition. The newspaper clippings have been photocopied and the ink is dark and legible. One of the Kalamazoo 1980 books is worn and discolored, the other one is in good condition. The photos are in good overall condition. The color is vibrant, some of the photos are in black and white. The documents are in good condition, there is some slight fading and age spots.

Biographical / Historical

Garret Van Haaften (1904-1989) was a Kalamazoo resident his entire life. His parents, Ivan and Jennie Van Haaften, both passed away when Van Haaften was a teenager. In order to support his siblings Van Haaften quit his formal education to work. He worked his way up at the bank and became president of the Kalamazoo National Bank in 1957. In 1931 he married Arline V. Howe. Van Haaften and Howe were active in the community. Both were members of the First Reformed Church of Kalamazoo. Van Haaften was an active member of the Rotary Club, the Red Cross, Pretty Lake and several other boards and clubs within the community. He was survived by his wife, two children, and five grandchildren.
