Willis H Foreman (“Jack”) was born on August 18, 1914 in Scott, Mississippi. He moved to Michigan and married Alta Werkman (Oct. 23, 1912-July 20, 1992). Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Italy as part of the 34th Repair Squadron. The letters include Corporal. Jack’s opinions and reactions to the war. The letters give insight into social life on a U.S. Army base and Army operations during WWII. In 1945 Alta and Jack purchased a house in Kalamazoo. Together they had a son named Jack Jr.(birthdate unknown). Jack passed away on August 24, 1996. The Collection was formed as a result of the division of A-2480, The Charles Starring Endowment Fund. The Funds donated at the bequest of Mr. Starring were used to purchase the letters from eBay for the Western Michigan University Archives and Regional History Collections.
