Scope and Contents

Michigan State University,a land grant educational institution established in 1855, began in 1907 to send experts across Michigan sharing information with farmers, their wives and children about crops, home management and programs like 4-H.This program became more formal in 1914 with the national Smith-Lever Act.The Extension services were coordinated through the various counties across the State. The South Burdick Extension Club would have been one of the services that Michigan State University would have had some hand in its coordination. One of the letters states that in 1950 there were similar groups at Wilson, South Westnedge, Westwood and Oakwood, some which are names of elementary schools and all are names of neighborhoods. The material covers the period of 1945 to 1950 so it is not known how long these clubs met and how long these clubs existed but that information may be found at a later time.
