Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of an advertisement scrapbook and a book of legal documents, and several photographs of Hoekstra Hardware which existed in Kalamazoo for nearly 150 years, 1867-2016.

Biographical / Historical

Hoekstra Hardware had been in the Kalamazoo area for nearly 150 years and been considered the oldest retail business in Kalamazoo. Hoekstra Hardware was started in 1867, by Dutch immigrants Jurian and Lucy Hoekstra and up until 1946 was run by the members of the Hoekstra family: Lucy, Jurian, Samuel, James, Elias, Jamie, John, and Peter.

Ownership later transitioned to the Hoogerheide, Izenbaard, and Ippel families and was remained a father son business up until it closed. The store was located 625 Portage Street, Kalamazoo MI. the store was both a retail and repair store. The store officially closed in October 2016.

Physical Description

This collection amounts to 0.50 cubic feet and consists of two books: advertisement scrapbook and a ledger of legal documents. There are several folders that consist of photographs and loose papers from the scrapbook, as well as copies of photographs from a flash drive and copies of the papers in the scrapbook. Some of the photographs in this collection were taken by Ward Morgan.

As for the books, the legal ledger is in decent condition, the cover is hardbound and has some damage near the spine but the pages have very minimal tearing/fading. The Advertisement Book not in good condition, the cover is hardbound and is in great condition however the pages themselves have tearing damage and the ads within the book are torn and very fragile. All of the material in the scrapbook are newspaper clippings from various Kalamazoo newspapers and they entirely consist of advertisements from Hoekstra Hardware. The dimensions for both books are “9.5 x14.5” The date of the book with legal records ranges from the late 1860’s to the mid 1940’s. The date of the scrapbook ranges from early 1900 to the late 1980’s.

The photographs are black and white and are slightly bent on the edges. There is an item that has been encased in Mylar and is an Advertisement that is cloth/fabric and is an advertisement for Doyle Brothers and is in both English and German. The Doyle Brothers ad is for a plumbing company that is based in New York.
