Creator

Biographical / Historical

The Glowing Embers were a Girl Scout Troop that served the Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, and Kalamazoo Counties, and was divided into six districts. The Glowing Ember’s purpose was to “inspire each girl to develop her own values and sense of worth as an individual” and to “provide opportunities for girls to experience, to discover, and to share planned activities that meet their interests.” Around the 1960’s, their membership for the west Michigan area was at 9,000 members. The Troop would annually fundraise for their member’s camps and workshops with cookie sales and community outreach events.

Physical Description

The collection is .5 cubic feet. Many of the paper materials are letter-sized, minus some that are notebook pages, thank-you cards, or notices, with paper sizes ranging from 2 by 5 inches to 8 by 11 ½ inches. The condition of the papers themselves are well, with little yellowing or signs of age. With some of the pages that are three rings holes in them, however, do suffer from minor fraying and ripping where the hole-punches reside. Many of the pages are typewritten, containing no smudges and little grammatical errors. The handwriting in each is legible, written in predominately graphite pencil, which does leave some smudges on pages and fainter letters in certain documents.
