Biographical / Historical

According to City Directories and the Kalamazoo Gazette found in America's Historical Newspapers, the Kalamazoo Sanitary Milk Company was incorporated in January, 1900. Located at 121 North Church Street, the company advertised in the newspaper for its pasteurized milk saying that it would be "Microbe Insurance." Another article dated November 5, 1904 discusses the sale of the building and everything inside the company to the Kalamazoo Creamery Company. In 1905 the City Directory says that the building was the site for the Kalamazoo Creamery Company.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .25 and is composed of two ledgers, 14” x 8½” x 1” and one receipt 8 ½” x 7 ¼”. The ledgers were made by the Ihling Brothers and Everard Company in Kalamazoo. The ledgers have red leather spines and corners, both of which are worn along with a black cover on the front and back. The first is a daybook from January to March, 1904 and contains client names, balances from previous month, location, and a day-to-day report of what was delivered plus the weekly balance due. The second ledger is a journal dated December 1903 to September 1904 and gives the name of the clients and the amount paid. Both ledgers are in fairly good condition although the red leather is worn and the binding is broken in some places. The receipt, found in one of the ledgers, is from the Kalamazoo Corset Company. Dated March 24, 1904, it reports a check for $6.18 signed by J.H. Hatfield, president and general manager. It also has a sketch of the factory in Kalamazoo that makes the building look larger than it actually was. The receipt is in good shape although it has been folded and there is wear along the crease lines.
