Biographical / Historical

The Grand Circuit began in 1871 in Cleveland, Ohio with meetings beginning in 1873. In 1908 Kalamazoo became the smallest city on the Grand Circuit Racing tour. The competition was held at the Recreation Park which had been founded in 1903 by a group of men headed by William P. Engleman (1856- 1938). Mr. Engleman served as the secretary of the Recreation Park for the duration of the Grand Circuit programs. Kalamazoo participated for 24 seasons from 1908 until 1932 when Kalamazoo formally withdrew from the Circuit for financial reasons.

Physical Description

This collection is 0.05 cubic feet and composed of eight programs regarding the Kalamazoo portion of the Grand Circuit Racing.

Five of the programs measure 6 ¾” by 4 ½” and two programs (1914 and 1915) measure 5 ¾” by 3 ½”. The 1910 editions show a woman hugging a horse on the front cover, the image is colored with brown and gold along with the usual black and white coloring. The words Official Racing Program are in the upper left-hand corner, and the price and publisher is on the bottom righthand corner. The back cover shows the Hollenden in Cleveland. The 1911 program is the same although it lacks the brown and gold coloring. The 1914 program is in light blue with dark blue ink, showing a picture of a horse, and the 1915 program is a simple dark gray with black writing. The 1923 program is on beige paper and has a picture of Peter the Great and Edward (pop) Geers on the front cover.

The collection is largely in a good condition, although three of the larger programs show signs of folding. One copy of the 1910 program seems to have been printed incorrectly with the contents larger than the cover.
