Scope and Contents

This collection is a single daybook ledger belonging to John Schroder concerning his 1896- 1897 grocer and dry goods business in Galesburg, Michigan. The ledger records various individuals and businesses that made purchases at John Schroder’s business, each of which is assigned a number, recorded on the left. Examples include Henry Steward, assigned thirteen, and cash assigned seventeen, which is assumed to be the expenses of John Schroder. Information is recorded by date, typically one day per page. On the right hand side of the page, goods and prices are listed. Typical goods include butter, coffee, lemons, meat, tobacco, seeds, and soap.

Biographical / Historical

John Schroder, 1837-1920, moved to the U.S. from Germany in 1859. In 1860, he married Mary Schroder and together they had three children named Lewis, Sherman, and Clarence. Lewis and Sherman went on to found Schroder Bros. Co. in Battle Creek, Michigan. John Schroder and his brother William Schroder were well to do farmers and merchants. They operated dry good stores in Galesburg, John Schroder and Schroder & Olin respectively.

Physical Description

The ledger occupies 0.25 cubic feet of space and measures 12” by 8”. The cover of the ledger has 1896 J. Schroder written in black marker. The cover shows signs of wear and discoloration and looks to have originally been gray in color with brown leather edges over the left hand corners. The spine says journal in black print. The material written inside is in pencil. Hand writing appears to belong to one or two people.
