Kalamazoo Fourth of July Programs
Scope and Contents
This collection is composed of two programs for Fourth of July celebrations in Kalamazoo in 1884 and 1891. The 1884 item showcases the “New Court House” and states that part of the day’s events will include the laying for the corner stone for the new court house.
The 1891 program's front page of the item has a red boarder with a red portrait of George Washington in the center of the page covered by “One Hundred and Fifteen Years of Independence” “Fourth of July Celebration at Kalamazoo Mich.” Along with the names for “Officers of the Day” and the names of “Committees.”

Biographical / Historical
At current moment there is not much known about the celebration, only the fact that the celebration was held on July 4, 1884 and July 4, 1891. The 1884 Program showed that there was a parade in the morning followed by afternoon events like “exercises at Bronson Park” music and various amusements. The program also stated that after the exercises at the Park that the audience and the committee will “lay the corner stone” for the New Court House in downtown Kalamazoo. The 1891 program showed that in the morning there was a parade, in the afternoon there was music, a bicycle race, sprinters race, and a “hose race” with prizes ranging from $4 to $75. The item was printed by Kalamazoo Publishing Co. Printers.

Physical Description
The collection consists of one folder containing two programs for a Fourth of July celebration in Kalamazoo in 1884 and1891. The 1884 item is in good condition; there are minimal signs of damage, staining, or yellowing. The item is typewritten with black lettering and is still legible. The size of the item is 6.5” x 10.75”
The 1891 item is in fair condition: there are signs of staining, tears around the edges and the item appears to have been folded at one point. The item is typewritten with blue letters and is still legible. The size of the item is 5.5” x 8”
