Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of the Kalamazoo Lions Trail and Tourist Guide published by the Kalamazoo Lions Club and the Kalamazoo Chamber of Commerce in 1928. The guide begins with an introduction to Kalamazoo before outlining different tourist trails. The main trail is The Lions Trail which includes detailed directions for navigating the trail. Pictures of prominent locations, such as Bronson Park and Western State Teachers College, are at the top of the pages. A map of the trail occupies in the center of the guide, and marks the Segway into different tourist locations like Milham Park, Gull Lake, and Lake Route-South.

Biographical / Historical

The Kalamazoo Lions Club was a unit of The International Association of Lion’s Club that was founded in 1917. The Lions Club is a fraternal organization that aimed to participate in the community, primarily through funding programs that benefitted the community as a whole, like the Lions Trail, or certain groups such as publications in braille for the blind. The Kalamazoo Lions Club is no longer in existence, although Portage and Comstock both have Lions Clubs.

Physical Description

The Tourist Guide measures 7 ½” by 4 ½” and occupies 0.05 cubic feet of space.

The front cover is decorated with a photograph of a river running through a forest, the photo itself is tinted with green hues. The name of the guide and the organizations responsible for its publication are printed in black letters with white highlights across the front cover. The back cover includes lists and descriptions of locations in Kalamazoo such as Milham Park, Golf Courses, and the Tourist Camp. These locations and descriptions inside the guide are on white paper and surrounded by slim light green lines that create a box around the edges of the page. The guide is in excellent condition despite some discoloration and marks visible on the back cover and internal pages.
