Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of three of Lida Adams Drown’s (1883-1972) credit certificates from the Lawrence Public Schools in 1900.

Printed sections include the school, the type of certificate, grades, faculty, class subject, and the name of the student. Lida Adams assessments were performed on May 31st and June 1st of 1900 in botany, physical geography, and Latin.

Biographical / Historical

Lida Leora Adams Drown was born in 1883 to Walter B. and Martha Adams. She had five siblings; Alma, Rosa, Nettie, Nina, and Water. Lida was born and raised in Michigan, attending Lawrence Public Schools for her education. In 1904 she married her first husband John Drown. Together they had three sons Lowell, Lynn, and Lyle Drown. In 1920 Lida divorced John Drown and she quickly married her second husband William Henry Ritter. Lida divorced Ritter in 1933 on grounds of extreme and repeated cruelty. She married her last husband Theodore C. Ballinger in 1938, whom she remained married to until his death in 1957. Lida passed away in 1972 at the age of 88.

Physical Description

This collection is 0.05 cubic feet of space and each certificate measures 4 ½” by 2 ½”. The certificates are printed in black ink on significantly yellowed white paper. Both the back and front of have black box boarders surrounding the printed text. The back of the certificate includes a section for faculty remarks and a reminder to the pupil to preserve the certificate. Only one remark section on the back of the certificate for first year Latin contains writing. Written sections are mostly legible and overall the credit certificates are in excellent condition, only showing signs of yellowing and some fading of the ink.
