Scope and Contents

This collection includes one 1896 telegraph from Charles Ames (1853-1925) to his brother Edward Ames (1851-1949) of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The top of the page has ‘The Western Union Telegraph Company’ printed in bold letters, and information on the transfer and delivering of messages written in smaller print below it. Underneath the printed information section is a fillable are for people to list various internal information, the date, sender, recipient, and the message.

Charles S. Ames Bio

Charles S. Ames was born to Adelia Ward and Charles Ames in 1853. Born in Vermont, the family moved to Illinois around 1855. Charles had four siblings, Edward Ames, Avery M., Chancery Daniel, and Annette J. Charles moved to Denver, Colorado in his adult life, where he lived until his death in 1925.

Edward Ames Bio

Edward Ames was born in 1851. Later he married Cornelia Annette Ames and together they had two children named Jessie and Thaddeus. He was a respected physician in Kalamazoo, Michigan from 1892- 1935. Edward passed away at the age of 89 at the home of his son Dr. Thaddeus H. Ames in Coconut Grove, Florida.

Physical Description

The telegraph takes up 0.05 cubic feet of space and measures 8” by 5”. This information is all written in black ink, and mostly legible. The back of the paper is blank. The paper itself is in good condition although it shows significant signs of yellowing and a slight tear in the lower left-hand corner. The telegraph is from Charles Ames to his brother Edward, telling him of the passing of their mother Adelia Ames (1820-1896), and notifying him of when the funeral will be.
