Biographical / Historical
On August 21, 1942 the Kalamazoo Navy Mothers’ Club No. 366 held their very first meeting at the YWCA. In order to be a voting member of the club, women must have at least one child serving in the U.S. Navy, Coast Guard, or Marines. However, other family members such as fathers, siblings, spouses, and grandparents also could become associate members without the ability to vote or hold office within the organization. Members had the opportunity to participate in social functions and volunteer work, such as the state convention occurring biennially on odd years and the national convention biennially on even years. In addition, the Kalamazoo club No. 366 regularly participated in community service projects for the Battle Creek VA Medical Center, as well as Fort Custer Training Center and National Cemetery. It is for these community service efforts that Club No. 366 was recognized with several awards for its outstanding work. In addition, the Navy Mothers’ Club was a tax-exempt welfare organization, further recognizing their efforts. Meeting and events notices can be found in the Kalamazoo Gazette spanning from 1942-2015. Club No. 366, the last Navy Mothers’ Club in Michigan at the time, disbanded in 2015 after the passing of Mildred R. “Millie” (Switzer) Pike (1916-2015). Ms. Pike had been a member of the club since 1957, with over 13,000 hours of volunteer service logged at the Battle Creek VA Medical Center.
