Scope and Contents

The collection is composed of newsletters from Volume 1 of the Morning Mail which provided news for residents of Downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan in 1962. It includes Vol. 1 No. 1 and Vol. 1 No. 7-47. The front top page of each reads “Morning Mail, The Morning Newsletter of Downtown Kalamazoo” and includes the volume, number, day of the week, weather and date.

Biographical / Historical

The Morning Mail was published by the Media Enterprises of Kalamazoo and was printed Monday-Friday. On November 16, 1962, they announced that they were going to start being a weekly newsletter and print on Wednesdays. It is not known how long this publication existed. The newsletters include local and national news, stocks, sports, quotes, and events. They don’t report on scandals or crimes, but they claim to report significant cultural, business, political, and governmental information.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to 54 Newsletters dated between September 14, 1962 and November 21, 1962. Most of the newsletters are one page back to back, except for a few of them which are two pages back to back. No. 1-41 are all 11¼ x 8½” and No 42-47 are 11” x 8½.”

There is one copy of each newsletter, except for No. 41, 39, 31, 23, and 12, which have two copies, and No. 46, 38, and 10, which have three copies of each.

The contents are all written with black ink. They are all in a somewhat fair condition, with yellowing pages, small tears on the edges, creases, pen or pencil marks, and all are stamped by the Kalamazoo Public Library. Everything is still legible though.
