The KLCQ was established in 1979 and had monthly meetings to get together for various reasons. There were exchanges of designs, quilts, blocks, and fabrics, shows, including a yearly quilt show in October, demonstrations of quilting, guest speakers, lectures, workshops, parties, discussions and presentations, classes, programs, retreats, made quilts and banners, quilted together, photographed quilts, and had slideshows. Eventually, a quilt archive was set up. Some of their quilts were even displayed in the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. At the meetings, vendors were allowed to sell their things, and members could also be vendors at meetings. They have had many meeting places over the years, including member’s houses, elementary schools, and churches. According to their website, the Kalamazoo Log Cabin Quilters exist to “promote quilt-making skills through education, fellowship and charitable service.” They have done service projects and made many donations, both monetary and in forms of quilts, to various organizations and charities, including the Kalamazoo Nature Center, YWCA Domestic Assault Shelter, Bronson Neonatal Care Unit, Hospice of Kalamazoo, Red Cross, Lovie Charity, and many more. Eventually, they got non-profit organization status for the KLCQ. The committee consists of or at one point consisted of: president/s, vice president/s, secretary, treasurer, membership, data entry, national workshops, quilt show, communication, charitable service, and fellowship. The members would all vote for the executive committee spots and voted on bylaws together. Dues from members were collected each year in order to rent meeting places and cover costs of the KLCQ. Membership cards and booklets were created for members, and monthly newsletters with questionnaires were sent out to members as well. The KLCQ started with 5 members in 1979 and in the 2020-2021 year they had 145 members.
