Scope and Contents

The front cover of the booklet gives an overview of its contents, making it clear that the intended audience is veterans. The pages on the left side of the booklet tend to be various advertisements for businesses in Kalamazoo, like dentists, medicine, cars, and stores. The right side of the booklet usually covers different songs, sometimes with accompanying pictures, others with a musical score so that the reader can grasp the tune of the song. The back of the booklet is covered with more advertisements.

The estimated date is based off the information given in one of the songs that claims it was written for the GAR’s 25-year anniversary.

  • Publication: Approximately 1890

Biographical / Historical

Half of the booklet is filled with advertisements for local services and businesses, some even printed on the margins underneath the songs. The booklet is dedicated to the Grand Army of the Republic, which was formed in 1866 and dissolved in 1956. The cover also mentions that the songs in the booklet were taken from the Acme Haversack of Song and Patriotic Eloquence, a bi-monthly illustrated magazine meant for soldiers. This booklet was specifically presented to the people in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Language of Materials

The collection is composed of one booklet containing the scores and lyrics for several different Civil War era patriotic songs circa 1890, published by Redington, Syracuse New York.

Physical Description

The booklet is in decent condition. While all the writing is legible, the ink cuts off or fades in some places, like in the first song in the booklet, where some of the notes are half-legible because of the half-printed marks. There is also a stain in the top left corner of the booklet (middle, near the spine when unfolded) that is most noticeable on the cover and backside of the booklet, though it does leak through a few pages. The spine of the booklet also has a bit of a stain.

The spine of the booklet seems to have been sewed with many small stitches instead of held together with a staple.
