Almina Kinnison Conner Diary
Scope and Contents
The diary starts off in January of 1888 and details the author’s day to day life, including weather, the conditions of her family members, important dates like her family members’ birthdays, and other activities. The author seems to have stopped writing in her diary in December 1889, before picking up the diary again in early January of 1901. She continued to write until August of 1901, leaving the rest of the book’s pages empty. Conner seems to write on almost always a daily basis, even if in only one or two sentences at a time. There are a few consistent spelling mistakes—Conner regularly spells ‘have’ as ‘hav’ and ‘sheep’ as ‘sheepe’, though most of her grammar and spelling are otherwise good. Several loose pieces of paper are enclosed in the diary, like the Memorial Exercises pamphlet for an event taking place at Riverside Cemetery in May of 1901. Also included are a few small strips of packing birch which have been written on with a pencil, a couple of business cards, and some letters presumably from family.

Biographical / Historical
Almina Kinnison Conner, (1840-1930) was born in Edwardsburg, in Cass County, MI to Lydia Cook and Josiah Kinnison (1808-1888), who was a farmer. There is not a lot of information available on Conner’s life before 1880. Conner had a son named Rinaldo Cook (1861-1927) before she married Henry E. Conner (1837-1902) in 1872. At some point, Almina, her son, and her husband moved to Howard, Cass County, MI. Henry Conner was a farmer, and Almina Conner spoke of his work in her diary, from planting and harvesting corn, to shearing sheep. Rinaldo Cook married his wife, Ettie Slates Cook in 1886, and Almina mentioned her quite frequently in her diary, as well as detailing the health of their child. With Henry Conner’s death, Almina likely moved in with her son until his death in 1927. She would die three years later at age 89, and was buried in the same cemetery as her son and husband.

Abstract
The collection is composed of a diary used by Almina Kinnison Conner (1840-1930) from Cass County, MI from 1888 to 1901.
Physical Description
Closed, the diary measures 7.5 inches by 10 inches, while opened it measures 15 inches by 10 inches. The diary’s front cover has a sticker reading 1888 on it, possibly added by a later source. The diary is in decent condition. The state of the binding was clearly bad enough that it needed to be mended at some point, as the black tape on the outside and the clear tape on the inside are not original. The clear tape along the inside of the binding shows how the binding and the pages were crumbling; it’s possible that the front cover was once completely detached. Some of this wear is present throughout the diary, though it has held up relatively well elsewhere. The pages show signs of aging and possible stains or water damage, especially around the edges, though nothing major enough to obscure any writing. There’s a small ink stain on the last few pages of the diary, which has bled out onto the cover. Judging from its similarity to the ink used in the diary and the faded condition, this stain is likely from the diary’s owner. The loose-leaf papers are a bit tattered at the edges but have otherwise held up well.
