Scope and Contents

The pamphlet serves as a weekly program, offering information about various events happening throughout the week. Most, if not all of the music is played by the Kentucky Kernels Orchestra of Lexington, Kentucky, who were reportedly performing there for the summer. Information on how to get to the resort includes a chart of distances from the resort to cities like Grand Rapids and Chicago and bus schedules between Gull Lake and Kalamazoo. Biographical / Historical

Originally part of Elnathan L. Hawks’ property, called Hawks Grove, the area along Gull Lake was popular, even if it was rather difficult to get to it in the early twentieth century. Hawks had purchased the land in the 1870s, using it as a getaway of sorts, with boat rides around the lake. With his retirement in 1890, Hawks sold the property to some investors. It was around then that the property was renamed to LaBelle. In addition to boat rides around the lake, the resort was popular for its large dancing hall. More cottages and road improvements were added as the years went by. With the invention and spread of electric interurban trains and consequential competition, LaBelle began to struggle. It switched hands multiple times, even filing for bankruptcy in 1914 due to debts and declining patrons after building a new inn in 1911. The LaBelle resort estate was purchased in 1921 by Frank W. Holmes and J. O. Hearn, with a new dancing pavilion erected. The resort switched to year-round seasons, with tobogganing slides for winter activities. The hotel on the resort burned down in 1925, with a new one opening up in 1926. The Kentucky Kernels Orchestra was invited by Holmes to perform in 1926 along with a number of other musicians and entertainment. In 1955, the Gull Lake Hotel on the LaBelle Resort was sold, before being reopened as a restaurant called the Gull Harbor Inn. It operated until 1978, when the building was torn down to make way for residential development.

Abstract

The collection is composed of a pamphlet advertising the LaBelle Resort located on Gull Lake, MI from around 1926.

Physical Description

Folded, the pamphlet measures roughly 5 inches by 7 inches while unfolded it measures 9.5 inches by 7 inches. Overall, the pamphlet is in decent condition. The binding has begun to tear at the bottom, and the paper in general seems fragile. The booklet was folded down the middle vertically at some point, leaving a lasting crease down the center. The covers are especially discolored, though not bad enough to obscure any writing. Various wrinkles and creases are present throughout the pamphlet, though the worst of the damage is to the binding. The booklet doesn’t seem in danger of falling apart, though it certainly is worse for wear.
