Scope and Contents

The collection amounts to approximately 3 cubic feet and is composed of items from Quota of Kalamazoo. Included are meeting minutes from 1945-1984, scrapbooks from 1950-2004, and other miscellaneous materials. Assorted photographs and “Woman of the Year” award items from the club are also present. Most of the pictures are unattributed and undated, and the award materials include newspaper clippings, event programs, and correspondence. The scrapbooks feature photographs, newspaper clippings, and other memories from Quota of Kalamazoo throughout the years.

Biographical / Historical

Quota of Kalamazoo was organized on June 12, 1945. Originally composed of 26 members, the organization provided support to the deaf and hard of hearing, as well as women and children. The first president, Margaret Bucknell Zolen, M.D., was installed on October 5, 1945. Guests at the event included the Mayor of Kalamazoo, the president of Kalamazoo College, and the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. Quota of Kalamazoo ceased operations in 2021.

Quota International was founded as a women’s service organization in 1919 in Buffalo, New York. In addition to its work combatting hearing loss, it also worked to advance gender quality. It its peak, Quota International had 270 clubs active in 14 countries. The group, throughout its history, partnered with United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the United States Department of Health and Human Services in an advisory role. In 2020, Quota International’s Board of Directors voted to dissolve the organization.

Physical Description

The meeting minutes are typed on, three hole punched, 8.5 inches x 5.5 inches paper and are in good condition, though there is some yellowing and wear on the edges of the paper. Most of the pictures and award materials show little signs of aging. The scrapbooks vary slightly in size and description, but on average measure around 12 inches x 15 inches x 2 inches. They are primarily hard bound.
