Identifier: RH-A-4453

Scope and Contents

The papers are grouped together by date. The newsletters provide a variety of information about the happenings of the organization, like events, thanking donors for their contributions, letters from the executive director, awards, upcoming events, volunteers, and more. A few of the newsletters include a form for orders of Kalamazoo Local Black History cards, distributed by the Society. There are two copies of a single issue, though they are distinguishable... by the more faded colors of one copy.

Creator

Biographical / Historical

The Society for History and Racial Equity (also known as SHARE) was founded as the Southwest Michigan Black Heritage Society in 2003 by Donna Odom, a former employee of the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. In addition to hosting an annual African-American Book Fair, the Society has hosted a variety of events concerning local history, like teaching people how to preserve photographs or creating programs to involve the local high school and middle school students... in historical research. SHARE has also worked with local libraries, like when they hosted a gathering of historians at the Portage District Library to give descendants of some of the early African-American settlers the opportunity to display their photographs and memorabilia. In 2015, the organization took on its current name to reflect the Society’s increasing work with racial equality and equity. Chianté Lymon took over Donna Odom’s position in 2021 as the organization’s executive director.
