Scope and Contents
This collection is composed of papers from 1897 to 1919 related to Reverend William DeBever primarily from his time at Nazareth Academy in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The collection contains handwritten letters, small notebooks of sermons, loose notebook paper, and printed article clippings. These papers contain information on Reverend DeBever's time at Nazareth Academy including events he was a part of, his thoughts on faith through sermons, and correspondence.
This collection is primarily composed of personal correspondence, sermons, notes for sermons, short article clippings, and other mentions of Reverend DeBever. Letters and postcards from Holland to Reverend DeBever are handwritten in Dutch. Handwritten correspondence to Nazareth dates from 1897 to 1917 and includes topics such as personal inquiries, Christmas events, the dedication of the Borgess Monument, and planned visits back to Nazareth. A small notebook of notes for sermons dates from about 1907 to 1908 and outlines his ideas for sermons as well as notations and changes he made. There are 2 small notebooks of sermons, undated, that cover topics such as marriage, morals, advent, sacraments, baptism, death, and confessions. The sermons also include bible verses. The last folder is a miscellaneous collection of mentions of Reverend DeBever including short article clippings, invitations to his memorial service, and a Dutch recognition of his work.

Biographical / Historical
Reverend William DeBever (1829–1919) was born in Holland and came to Michigan when he was about 45 years old where he came to lead sermons and mass. Reverend DeBever was also a chaplain at Nazareth Academy. He is buried in Washtenaw County.

Arrangement
The collection was part of the Congregation of St. Joseph materials (A-4152). A decision was made by the archivist for the Sisters of St. Joseph, Lisa Gibbon to transfer this material to the Regional History Collections separating it from the materials from the Congregation.
Physical Description
The collection amounts to .25 cubic feet. The condition of this collection is fair. the papers are yellowing and there is minimal tearing. All handwritten notes are in pen or ink and are legible. Some of the letters are in Dutch.
