Reverend Nicholas Sifferath Papers
Scope and Contents
This collection is primarily composed of Reverend Sifferath’s writing and correspondence. It also contains letters from his relatives and his life history. A scrapbook created about him is included in this collection as well as photocopies of all of its contents. This includes articles, telegraphs, and letters. There is a correspondence folder dated from 1944 and 1974 – 1976 that includes letters from one of his relatives Marie Trostheide Fisher to the Sisters of St. Joseph. These letters primarily discuss her wish to write a story about Reverend Sifferath. There is also a miscellaneous folder that contains correspondence to and from Reverend Sifferath in their original and copied forms regarding his travels and mass. It also includes receipts, money orders, and confirmation slips. This collection also contains the original handwritten copy and transcription of one of his lectures entitled “Lecture on the Indians”. A small book of his translation of The Catechism is included as well as a history entitled “Old Arbre Croche” about Cross Village where he lived and worked for 20 years. Then there are 2 different histories written about Reverend Sifferath’s life, one by Sister Wanda Swantek and the other by Larry Massie.

Biographical / Historical
Reverend Nicholas Louis Sifferath (1828–1898) was born in Germany. He moved to Michigan and became a priest in 1857 where he also spent 20 years doing mission work with Native Americans at Cross Village. While there he became fluent in Ojibway and Ottawa dialects and translated several works including The Catechism. From 1877 to 1897 Reverend Sifferath served as a chaplain in Detroit. After this he went to live at Nazareth Academy in Kalamazoo where he was the first chaplain and gave mass for the sisters and pupils. He is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Kalamazoo.

Abstract
This collection is composed of Reverend Nicholas Sifferath’s writing and correspondence during his time as a priest in Michigan. It also includes correspondence from his relatives. The papers themselves encompass the years between 1850 and 1976.
Immediate Source of Acquisition
This collection originally was a part of the Congregation of St. Joseph Collection (A-4152) and was given to the Regional History Collections by the Congregation of St. Joseph in 2025.
Physical Description
The collection amounts to .25 cubic feet and contains loose notebook paper, printed paper, handwritten letters, and 2 small books. It contains information on Reverend Sifferath’s correspondence, life, and writing including translations. All handwritten notes are in pencil or ink. The collection is in fairly good condition. The pages are yellowing but the writing is legible. Some of the letters are in German and French.
