Biography

Born in Michigan in 1858 to Charles Wilkes and Charlotte House Wilkes both of whom were born in England. It is not known when they came to the United States but they lived in Allegan, Michigan where Charles worked as a hardware merchant. Born in 1858, their son Charles R. Wilkes, Jr. grew up in Allegan later working as a lawyer and banker. He married Bertha Pritchard Wilkes (1869-1945) on June 1, 1898 and for a time lived with her parents Benjamin Pritchard and Mary Kent Pritchard. Benjamin fought in the 4th Michigan Calvary and helped capture Jefferson Davis. Charles and Charlotte House Wilkes had one daughter, Frances Pritchard Wilkes who was born and died in 1904.
