Scope and Contents

The box contains 17 planners beginning with 1885 and ending with 1924. Planners from the years 1892, 1893, 1897, 1898, and 1905 through 1923 are not included. The planners contain mostly notes on court cases and daily expenditures. Some contain loan information, addresses, Christmas shopping lists, and other miscellaneous notes. In 1903, Wilkes wrote many pages of journal entries detailing his trip to the United Kingdom with his wife Bertha from June to September of that year. The box also contains a folder of newspaper clippings from 1878 to 1880, including articles about a court case, articles about contemporary economic issues, an 1875 address from Ulysses S. Grant, and other small clippings. Another folder contains photocopies of these newspaper clippings, and a third folder contains genealogical research on Wilkes in the form of web pages and records printed from Ancestry.com and HeritageQuest.

Abstract

The collection consists of 17 daily planners from 1885 to 1924 by Charles R. Wilkes Jr. (1858-1930) a lawyer in Allegan, Michigan.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .50 cubic feet and contains 17 planners written by Charles R. Wilkes, Jr. (1858-1930), each bound with leather or fabric. The planners range in size from about 2.5x5.5” to 3.5x7”, and are in fair condition. The planners range from 1885 through 1924 with some years missing. Some of the bindings have separated from the covers but few if any pages are missing or torn. The covers are worn but not damaged. The box also contains newspaper clippings from the 19th century that are tattered but are still able to be unfolded and handled. The box also contains photocopies of the newspaper clippings from 1878 to 1880 that relate to national politics and to the economy as well as print-outs of online genealogical research on Charles R. Wilkes, Jr.
