Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of material including socialist and art magazines, court cases, art school material, socialist organization material, and photo and printing plates that were collected and used by Guy Lockwood.

The court cases in the collection all involve Lockwood. The first court case is between Lockwood and the Acme Art School and it is about money that the art school owes Lockwood and refused to pay. The second court case is between Lockwood and the Acme Art School once again and the art school claims that Lockwood violated “contract of employment.” The third and final court case in this collection is between Guy and Annie Lockwood and details the end of their marriage.

This collection was donated by the Kalamazoo Valley Museum which received the collection from the family.

Physical Description

This collection amounts to 3.75 cubic feet and is composed of material from Guy Lockwood. The material within the boxes vary from art and socialist magazines, several court cases that involved Lockwood, photo and printing plates, socialist correspondence, and student material and correspondence.

The art magazines are titled Art Magazine, eight issues from 1923. All are in good condition there is little signs of deterioration. The pages of the magazines are also in good condition, they are typed in black ink, there are various cartoons and drawing scattered throughout the magazine. These magazines serve as a helpful resource for armature artists with tips to improve their art with photographs and art prints that can serve as examples. The dimensions of the magazines are “9 x 11.5”.

The socialist magazines were published by the Lockwood Publishing Company and they contain various types of socialist propaganda. They are all paperback and range from various sizes: “4 x 5.5”, “4.5 x 6”, and “4.5 x 6.5”. They are legible and in good condition. The covers all contain various cartoons and most have hints of color, mostly red.

The Art Course books were used in the Lockwood Art School and they were typical textbooks that a student would use in an art course. The books are in good condition there is little signs of deterioration. The covers of the books are hardcover and the pages are connected to the spine. The covers came in different colors such as gold/brown, blue, and green and this is to designate different lesson section. The pages of the book are also in good condition; there is very little signs of damage. The content of the book contains several different types of various art lessons you would teach in an art course. The dimensions of the books are “9 x 12”.

The print and photo plates are in good condition. Some of the plates are bent and slight stained but still viewable. The sizes of the plates range from “2 x 3” to “5 x 8”. The plate are made from some type of metal, possibly steel or aluminum.
