Scope and Contents

This collection is composed of a certificate of achievement for Esther Meachum issued in 1916. The certificate was presented to Esther when she was likely still in Elementary school. The award was for having no tardies or absences in the Spring of 1916. She attended school in District 1 in the township of Arlington in Van Buren Country.

Biographical / Historical

Esther Meachum was born on December 28, 1909 and died March 30, 2006. She graduated high school in Bangor in 1926, and then she attended Western Michigan University, graduating in 1928. She later worked at WMU in the registration office and library from 1950-1969. She was a member of the P.E.O for 50 years from 1965 until her death. P.E.O is an organization focused on helping women with education. She married Harold Lafler in 1968, and changed her name to Ester Lafler.

This collection contains one folder and occupies 0.05 cubic feet of space. The certificate is approximately 12” x 8”.

Condition of the item is fair. There are a crease marks were the certificate was folded. The paper is faded and there are stain marks on it. There are also small tears on the paper.
