Scope and Contents

Nelson Curtis was born in Kalamazoo, MI in 1921 to Bessie and Homer Curtis. In 1934, when the scrapbook was created, the family lived on 811 Harrigan Ct. and his father worked as a printer. His family attended the Kalamazoo Missionary Church. Curtis graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in June 1939. After a couple years, he attended Western Michigan College to study education. In the 1942 yearbook, Brown and Gold, Curtis is pictured as a member of the Men’s Glee Club. Also, in 1942 he enlisted in the Army to fight in World War II. After his enlistment, Curtis returned to Western Michigan College. He was interested in French and German; according to the 1946 and 1947 yearbook he was a member of Der Deutshe Verein and Le Cercle Francais, which were campus language organizations. Curtis graduated from Western Michigan College in 1947 or 1948 (he’s a senior in the 1947 yearbook, but still listed as a student in the 1948 city directory). In 1950, he taught at Kalamazoo Central High School. According to the directory, by 1974 Curtis was teaching in Mishawaka, Indiana. He was a member of the Bethel College Church of Mishawaka. Curtis died in 1984 in Mishawaka and was buried in Kalamazoo at Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery.

Physical Description

The scrapbook is .25 cubic feet and contains 49 photographs. There is one loose page, three loose photographs, and one loose newspaper clipping. The pictures are glued down, and some of them are starting to detach from the page. Otherwise, the scrapbook is in good condition. The photographs themselves appear to be undamaged and are clearly viewable.

The photographs are mainly of Curtis and his family and/or friends. Curtis included photographs of himself at various ages, from when he was a baby to when he was an older child. None of the photographs are labeled, except for two. One is labeled “mother” and the other “Miss Shope.”

Provenance

The scrapbook was created by Nelson Curtis when he was thirteen years old, in approximately 1934.

Notes

The scrapbook was a Starring purchase.
