Biographical / Historical

The Veterans of World War I, Kalamazoo Barracks #551, Ladies Auxiliary was created on May 7, 1956. The organization was made up of wives, widows, and daughters of World War I veterans. It appears to have been affiliated with Kalamazoo Barrack No. 551 of the Veterans of World War I. However more information about that group was unavailable. The group was founded the home of Mrs. Vera Moyer, 1833 Royce Avenue, Kalamazoo. It then moved to the American Legion hall. The organization worked with both the VFW and American Legion to support aging World War One veterans.
Group activities included social events, fundraisers, and commemoration of veterans who were passing away. The Veterans of World War I United States of America was formed in the late 1940’s to be a veterans organization specifically for World War I veterans. A Ladies Auxiliary was also formed from the female relatives and spouses of veterans. This organization continued through the 1970’s and 1980’s at least in some areas. The length of time which the Kalamazoo branch continued is unknown.
