Carl’s Old Dutch Station Chart

 Item — Folder: 1
Identifier: RH-A-4350

Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of one calendar/map/distance chart, most likely made around 1940, from Carl’s Old Dutch Station, which was located in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Several features can be found on the container. On the front side there is a calendar for April 1940 to March 1941, the address and phone number for Carl’s Old Dutch Station, a list of services the Station offers, and directions for use. The station was located at 1223 S. Westnedge Ave, an address which no longer exists in Kalamazoo. An article found in the Kalamazoo Gazette suggests that the station was opened in 1939 by Harley Marquis. On the reverse side there is a map of Michigan which displays in visual form all of the distances between the cities listed on the slider, as well as a state ferry schedule with times for each season.

Physical Description

The collection amounts to .05 cubic feet and contains a sliding chart which is meant to fit in a larger container. Together they measure 3.5x8”. In the container there is a tall, thin vertical hole which displays information found on the slider. Along the top of the slider are listed the names of several cities in Michigan, and below each city name are 20 numbers. The numbers represent the distance between the city listed on the slider and each city whose name is listed along the slot on the container. Both the slider and the container are in poor condition, heavily stained and significantly yellowed. However, almost all the text is legible with the exception of some fading obscuring a few small parts of the map on the reverse side. The container is coming apart with an opening exposed along the top horizontal edge.
