Farmer Laborer Diary Collection

Scope and Contents This collection contains the diary of a lumberman from 1868, and contains information regarding his daily routine, as well as his business dealings with local farmers and business associates. The diary owner appears to have either owned a small farm himself, or served as a temporary laborer on other farms in the area (he also seems to have owned small amounts of livestock). Featherbone Company Records Collection

Scope and Contents Edward K. Warren was born in Vermont in 1847 and moved to Three Oaks in Berrien County, Michigan in 1858 with his parents. In 1883, Edward established the Warren Featherbone Company after recognizing a market for improved corset materials. After securing a patent, Edward began producing "featherbone," an alternative to pricey and frail whalebone. Featherbone was made from pointer feathers discarded by regional feather duster factories. Scope and Contents The children sketched on some of the pages were probably Rhea and Martha Mcewen, the daughters of H. C. Mcewen. H. C. Mcewen worked for the public highways in Leonidas in 1888. They signed her name to a few pages. Rhea Mcewen was born in 1912 and Martha Mcewen was born in 1914, both in Leonidas, Michigan.

Scope and Contents Florence May Lyon was born in April 30, 1856 as Florence May Graha and died on September 2, 1935. She is buried in the Fulton Street Cemetery in Grand Rapids, MI alongside her husband Fredrick D Lyon. He lived until 1945. Fredrick was a tailor and took control of a major tailor business according to Chapman’s history of Grand Rapids from 1881. In 1913 he lost his job as second deputy of the highway department.
