Scope and Contents Most of the letters are addressed to Harriet M. Ashley and her husband Jerome B. Ashley. Harriet was born in Ohio in 1841. Jerome was also born in Ohio in March of 1837. He and Harriet were married in 1858 and then moved to Michigan a year later. He was a farmer and was drafted to the Civil War in 1863. Forbes served successively with the 50th Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers and 15th New York Engineers from September 9, 1861 until his second discharge in June 1865. In 1860 he is staying at a hotel in Otsego and again working as a farmer. By 1870 he is living in Mud Springs, El Dorado County, California working as a miner.
