Elmore Y. Warner Letter

Scope and Contents The letter is dated March 24, 1862. It is filled with general news. He talks about that the regiment may be on the way further south. Warner had been sick but felt better. He had stopped at the house of a widow and five daughters who helped him even though all their friends had been in the Confederacy. Scope and Contents The collection is composed of items found in a Bible, called a Cottage Bible. The genealogy in the Bible is from a family that lived in Cass County, mostly in Pokagon Township. Also included are programs for the Pokagon Township Sunday School Association for 1889 and 1898. It appears that the Bible may have come from Cass County. Two of the names listed in the genealogy, Elijah and Betsy Houck are found in the 1860 Census living in Pokagon Township. The other names were not found yet. The...

Esther Lane

Scope and Contents Black and white and color photographs of Esther Louise Lane and class composites from her teaching career in Parchment, Michigan. Majority of the photographs are from Esther's years teaching at South Elementary and Central Elementary in Parchment, Michigan, from 1945-1980. There is a large photograph of the Western Michigan Alumni Glee Club and several Christmas cards from students.

The certificate was presented to Esther when she was likely still in Elementary school. The award was for having no tardies or absences in the Spring of 1916. Scope and Contents This collection contains the diary of a lumberman from 1868, and contains information regarding his daily routine, as well as his business dealings with local farmers and business associates. The diary owner appears to have either owned a small farm himself, or served as a temporary laborer on other farms in the area (he also seems to have owned small amounts of livestock). Featherbone Company Records Collection

Scope and Contents Edward K. Warren was born in Vermont in 1847 and moved to Three Oaks in Berrien County, Michigan in 1858 with his parents. In 1883, Edward established the Warren Featherbone Company after recognizing a market for improved corset materials. After securing a patent, Edward began producing "featherbone," an alternative to pricey and frail whalebone. Featherbone was made from pointer feathers discarded by regional feather duster factories. Warren opened his first featherbone factory in Three Oaks....

Scope and Contents The children sketched on some of the pages were probably Rhea and Martha Mcewen, the daughters of H. C. Mcewen. H. C. Mcewen worked for the public highways in Leonidas in 1888. They signed her name to a few pages. Rhea Mcewen was born in 1912 and Martha Mcewen was born in 1914, both in Leonidas, Michigan.
