Archie Royer, Sr. Collection

Scope and Contents The letters in this collection detail Royer’s life on his farm in the 1940s. They range in date from November 1941 to July 1948. They are all addressed to Bert Cole (1875-?), a friend whom Royer presumably met while touring with the Cole and Lockwood Circus in 1894. Cole was the son of one of the circus’ directors, and also served as the circus treasurer. He lived in New York at the time the letters were written. These ledgers record a variety of calls the department received many of which dealt with animals, both alive and deceased, theft, assaults, lost items, accidents, missing children, rubbish, dangerous sidewalks and people who were inebriated.The entries record the reports but do not cover what the police did to deal with what was being reported.

A.W. Johnson Company

Scope and Contents A.W. Johnson retail store was opened on August 29, 1914 on 110 W. Main St. by Alfred Woodworth Johnson and Vernon McFee. On February 13, 1915 Alfred Woodworth bought out his partner Vernon McFee, making Alfred the president and sole owner of the company. Lawrence Barnes joined the company as a salesman in 1919 where he would work for Alfred Woodworth until Alfred’s retirement in 1958. Alfred would spend his remaining years as a Christian Science Practitioner until his death on July 16, 1961....
